Conditions of the Intestines

Leaky Gut Syndrome is a condition in which there is a reduction in the ability of the intestinal wall to keep out large and unwanted molecules. Substances that are normally kept outside the body and within the intestines leak across the intestinal wall and into the body. This is caused by the occurrence of spaces between the cells of the intestinal wall, they become enlarged, due to a number of reasons.

The symptoms of this condition are as follows:

Insufficient digestive enzymes
A diet rich in refined carbohydrates
Food additives
Environmental pollutants
Candida and gut dysbiosis which is caused by antibiotics, etc.
Poor liver function which results in inflammatory toxins being excreted into the intestines in bile
Alcohol and caffeine which irritate the gut wall
Drugs like antacids and pain killers
Chronic stress, which reduces blood flow to the gut which in turn does not make it possible to repair itself

It is believed that leaky gut syndrome plays a role in causing other illnesses as well. These illnesses are mostly auto-immune diseases. This means that the immune system attacks cells within the body. It is also linked to environmental illnesses. These illnesses are characterized by allergies, symptoms caused by chemical exposure, sub-clinical nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal symptoms. Increase in the toxic load on the body produced by a leaky gut makes the nervous system and the immune system hyper-stimulated.

Finding natural remedies for GERD or acid reflux is important due to the fact that taking antacids cause more problems in the long run.
